Steam Boiler Repair in NYC

So much of New York runs on steam heat: prewar apartment buildings, brownstones, and co-ops with radiators in every room. Steam is its own craft, and a general handyman often gets it wrong. We connect you with technicians who actually understand one-pipe and two-pipe steam systems.

Signs it’s time to call

  • Radiators stay cold, or only some rooms get heat
  • Loud banging or water-hammer noise when the system fires
  • Whistling or spitting steam from radiator air vents
  • The low-water cutoff keeps tripping the boiler off
  • The sight glass is empty, cloudy, or bouncing
  • The boiler makes steam but the building still won’t warm up

When to call a pro

Steam problems tend to be about balance. Pressure, water level, venting, and pitch all have to be right. Banging pipes and uneven heat usually mean something is off in that chain. A steam-literate tech can trace it instead of just swapping parts.

What’s included

What the technician handles

Real steam knowledge

Techs who understand near-boiler piping, main vents, and how one-pipe and two-pipe systems are supposed to behave.

Pressure and controls

Checking the pressuretrol, gauge, and safety controls. Most steam systems should run on ounces of pressure, not high psi.

Water level and cutoff

Servicing the low-water cutoff and auto-feeder so the boiler keeps a safe, steady water line.

Venting and balance

Diagnosing air vents and main venting so steam reaches every radiator and the banging stops.

Questions

About this service

Why do my steam pipes bang so loudly?

Water hammer usually comes from condensate trapped in the pipes, often from pitch, poor venting, or waterlogged mains. A steam tech can find the cause instead of living with the noise.

My radiator is cold at one end, is it broken?

Often it’s the air vent, not the radiator. On one-pipe steam a stuck or wrong-sized vent stops steam from filling the radiator fully. It’s usually a straightforward fix.

Is high pressure making my system worse?

Very likely. Most residential steam runs best on well under 2 psi. A pressuretrol set too high wastes fuel and can worsen banging and uneven heat.
